Week 13 - Entry 1
Overview of Blog Assignment
One of the main parts of the Writing in the Health Professions course has been blog postings. Every other week students were expected to write and post two separate blog entries on their own personal blogs for course credit. The topics of these blog entries was to be related to your coursework, major, career, or other news from your field of study. Most weeks there were also several optional topics to choose from that were provided by the course instructor.
Writing and posting entries to a blog site was initially annoying, but eventually I grew to like it. At first I did not understand what the benefit of writing on a blog was instead of blackboard. I eventually did enjoy learning how to use the site and format my own blog though.
I did find it difficult at times to come up with topics for my entries. I started my first few entries by explaining my major, why I chose it and what I can do with it, what I would be doing in my career, and detailing the academic pathway necessary to obtain that title. After I spoke about these topics I found it somewhat challenging to come up with other things to talk about. The optional topics were nice but I did not feel like I was doing a great job trying to explain medical news in my field.
The blog assignments gave me a quick refresher course on writing for a specific audience, but other than that I was not able to get much more out of the assignments. I think that I personally would have learned more from more specific assignments related to the course material as opposed to these open ended entries.
Overall, the blog assignments were not overly challenging, but I found myself wondering if other types of assignments would help me learn the course material more.
