Week 7 - Entry 2
Optional Prompt:
Write about one of the Course Objectives from the Syllabus. How do you interpret this? What do you expect to learn to feel like you have met this goal?
Response:
The coarse objective that I will be discussing today is "Raise students’ awareness of SDOH."
SDOH stands for social determinants of health. According to the CDC, social determinants of health are conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play that impact a wide range of health risks and outcomes. There are five main areas when considering social determinants of health, which include healthcare access and quality, education access and quality, social and community context, economic stability, and neighborhood and built environment.
This course objective contains many parts, but is relatively simple. This goal wants students to understand how a variety of factors in a given person's environment can play a role on that person's health risks and outcomes. This requires an analysis of the five key areas of the social determinants of health for any given area. Understanding these factors will help us understand how to better communicate and connect with our audience.
In order to meet this goal, I think I need to have a deep understanding of each of the areas that make up the social determinants of health. I also need to know what consequences each of these factors create, and ways to combat these issues. Once I know those things, I will be able to analyze a given area and better understand what it helping, and hurting the individuals who live there, and hopefully have a better idea of how to better serve the area.
